Lotus boss to hand over running of firm

MD Mike Kimberley

01 April 2009 15:21

The veteran boss of Group Lotus is to hand over the running of the car-maker to an executive committee for a month while he recovers from back surgery.

Mike Kimberley - who returned for a second stint as Lotus chief executive in 2005 - issued a statement to staff revealing that doctors had ordered him to take four weeks off to recuperate.

Mr Kimberley, 70, underwent surgery for a prolapsed disc in his back in October, but is now suffering “an increasing level of pain and lack of mobility”.

He plans to resume the reins at Lotus on May 1 to lead the firm “through the extremely challenging period in the forthcoming year”.

According to his statement to staff: “Regretfully the operation has not proved to be successful, as I ignored the consultant's instructions and instead of taking six weeks leave, I only managed three days before resuming my working schedule of 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the current extremely difficult economic climate.

“Most frustratingly, however, due to an increasing level of pain and lack of mobility I am now forced to take four weeks' recuperation leave from the business as instructed by my doctors. I will therefore be absent from the company from 1st April to 1st May 2009. This will allow me to return in full health to lead us through the extremely challenging period in the forthcoming year.”

Bugger, sorry the surgery has not gone as we would all have hoped, rest is needed but is a very hard medicine to swallow,on a different note when he finds out you`ve called him a veteran you`ll have your head in your hands to play with, give him all our best and put him in a wheelie bin for Donnington.Clockwork:)

Sorry to hear the surgery didn't go as planned... I couldn't imagine the pain you must be in. I hope you heal quickly. :weight_lift:

Back surgery is always tricky, but MJK is in pretty good shape for 70 - I expect he'll pull through!

Tony, sorry to hear that your Dad is not feeling well. Back pain can be so debilitating and something you must take absolute care of daily....I deal with mine daily :(

I hope this time away for MJK goes well and I'm sure he will come back more energized than ever!

All the best to Mike Kimberley.

Blimey, I read the threads title and thought the comander in cheif had bloody retired!(I nearly died of shock)

I guess when the doctors tell you to take it easy for six weeks they really mean it.:(

Take it easy this time for goodness sake Mike, I'm reasonably sure Lotus can survive for the coming month without you

Take care,

Wayne

So has anyone heard if MJK is back to feeling well and directing Lotus again?

I hear he did not keep his butt down as long as he should have... and is flying off to "where ever" as needed... So I'd guess he is back at the con.
