Ahhh... the Caterham C21. I liked that car and was disappointed when it went away. What happened? Just poor sales?

Tim Engel

Looking at this photo makes you realise how right Ron Hickman was when he advised Colin Chapman to patent all his designs..................................

Dont know much about the Caterham 21 as I had left the UK when it was announced/produced (all of 50 units), it looks kinda pleasant and generally innofensive though (and was probably alot more expensive than a Caterham 7)

It strikes me that Caterham are now in a similar position to Morgan where as most people only want to see them as making one style of car , and try as they might they will never be able to break free of the corner they are painted into.

I am thinking that Lotus may now be in the same boat re: the Elise/Exige, alot of later generation Lotus enthusiasts are only interested (obsessed?)in the Elise and wont or cant see that they are capable of making bigger , heavier, more accomodating vehicles.

Time will tell on that particular theory I guess.

I think Lotus will be ok once they get the Esprit sorted,Caterham are as you say ,a bit stuck, the 21 ran for five years,Mr Nearn had wanted to retire and (I believe)turned down £10 mill. for the company,he let his son run it and the BBC made a documentary, the 21 was not selling at £23,000 and Simon (the son)decided to shift the company away from 7`s and build a new car, should take about six months said he ,would you like to film it ? the Beeb said yes and for the next three years a documentary was made.Caterham went to Reynard who at the time were doing very well, the story of what followed was one that must have brought Mr Nearn to tears,he came back to work in the end and accepted £5 mill.(I believe) from Mr Ali`s investment group. There must be a link somewhere to the film,it was called"Survival of the fastest" directed by Barnaby Peel.Clockwork:)

Hey Clock work, is that lime green one in the front an Ultralite S2K?

I didn't know they were in the UK....for whatever reason I just assumed they were here stateside.

Sorry Martin ,been out (more shows),the lime green one is a Robin Hood 2b,(not good) the chassis is made from a continuous piece of bent tube (2b) so it weighs in at at a big disadvantage, popular as all the parts are reasonably priced and available from one scource.Clockwork :)

Looks painfully similar to the Ultralite:
