Very impressed with the Ford GT40 noise. I filmed a blue GT40 at full chat down the Lavant Straight on the Goodwood circuit. It was during the Revival in September and racing in the Whitsun Trophy. The sound was amazing.
I would host the film if I could but it's 80MB! I'll see if I can put it on Youtube.

what was the power on those old GT40's ?

There are w few different engines / BHP. The 1965 Le Mans Mk1 GT40 ran 4.7 litre 289 Cobra engines, turned up to 306BHP.
The Mk2 GT40's that won the 1966 Le Mans were running Ford Galaxie 427 7 litre iron pushrod engine, detuned (for reliability) to 450bhp.

I was at the GT40 Reunion at Watkins Glen about 5 years ago, and got to see and hear a whole grid of them (and met Dan Gurney):mf_dribble:

My favourite is the Canadian Comstock GT40, but I also like the Yellow GT40 that Sir Anthony Bamford now owns (that was a camera car in the movie Le Mans) A friend of mine , Andy Newell looks after that car for him (and the 250 GTO Ferrari):001_smile:

how many " street " legal GT40's were built ? Just curious.
In the movie Lemans there is a GT40 driving through the gates at Lemans in traffic at 2 mph . it must have been brutal on that motor to be running below 100 mph.

how many " street " legal GT40's were built ? Just curious.
Define "Street Legal". It was a different time and street legal was whatever you hung a license plate on. The Ford GT40 was not specifically built as a street car, however a few wealthy people did buy them for the street.
Like most race cars, the GT40 that competed internationally reflected the preparation skills of the teams... and the factory backed teams were at the front of the pack. But the JW Engineering cars that won LeMans twice were not the same as the "standard spec" GT40. Way different. A box stock GT40 (whatever that means) could be considered streetable for the serious owner, but a JW GT40 Mk 1b would be impractical for public roads.
The GT40 should not be confused with the Ford GT Mk III, with which Ford did test the waters of a true "GT" version. However it flopped and just seven cars were built.
One thing that has gotten lost in time is that the name GT40 only applied to the one, first model, and the 40 was dropped from subsequent names. The 7 liter cars were GT Mk II's and GT Mk IV's, and the street cars were GT Mk III's. No "40". Now everyone calls all the Ford GTs, "GT40", and that's not correct.
"GT40" wasn't even a Ford name. It was applied by Hollman-Moody and registered by them... which is why the new version was just called the Ford GT.

Favourite sounding engines I can remember!
BRM V16 Herd Nick Masons whilst at a test day, my god what a brilliant sound!
Lamborghini V12 (in a Miura S)Simply makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Dino V6 (in a Lancia Statos)The Stratos has louder pipes than the 246GTB/S, My friend Denis has one the lucky bastard.
Rolls-Royce Merlin(s) (in anything except a Tank)The only reason I would have wanted to have been alive in WW2 was to hear these on a regular basis.
Cosworth DFV (in anything)I'm lucky enough to hear the sound they make alot these days, and never tire of it.
Chevrolet ZL1 427 (in a John Greenwood Corvette)made me deaf for a week!
Rover-BRM Gas Turbine (in the BRM Le-Mans car)herd it as a kid, wrongly thought it was the sound of the future of the automobile.
Maserati V6 (in a Merak)Knew a woman with one, even though the engine was a knackered smoker, it still sounded great.
998cc Coventry Climax/ Hillman (on 40 Webers in my old Imp), the neighbours used to come out to listen to it when I was warming it up in the morning.
Cosworth/Aston Martin V12 (in a Vanquish)drove one quite a bit, sounds like a sewing machine at idle, but over 3000 rpm it takes on a wild and brutal howling persona.
ZR-1/LT-5 Chevrolet (followed one over a 100kms with my windows wound down just to listen to it.)
I don't mind the sound of the 910 Lotus Turbo, but the plenium chamber muffles the gargling sound the Dellortos usually make, so it isn't really a favourite.

Very interesting. Carol Shelby also correctly states that the original 1964 cars were GT's and not GT40's; Chassis number GT/101 and GT/112. The rumour was that the GT40 label came about from UK journalists.
The UK cars, produced at Slough were called GT40s (as Ford UK adopted the name), with chassis numbers GT40 P/1000 to GT40 P/1085. Also the parts list from Slough states GT40 (codes GT40P/-), as does the rare sales brochure from the time and Ford UK press adverts for the GT40. The Slough factory was sold to JW Automotive.

I don't think Hollman-Moody registered the GT40 name. They may have been the first to call the car that though.
When Ford bought out the new GT , they tried to buy the rights to use the name GT 40 from Safir, who were an English company that used the name for their "continuation" GT40 ,Safir sold the rights and tooling to an American company (who also used the Safir name )but apparently Ford wouldn't pay them the 8 mill they wanted for the rights to use the name.
Did you know that Lotus apparently never registered the Esprit name for use on an automobile in the USA, which is how GM got to use it on the Pontiac Firebird Esprit in 1973.

I've sat in that very car a couple of years ago.:001_smile:
Andy Newell bought it over for him and Joe Bamford to drive at Mt.Tremblant.
It was rebodied in the style of the forthcoming rear engined 250 LM.
Reeks of history, that car.

It's a bit of a one off that car. Also, sounds a lot nicer that the other GTO's there. There must have been a mod to the engine.
Here's a pic I took of it at the 2004 Revival:

Theres a silver plaque on the console celebrating its notable race wins and drivers.
Was truly an honour and quite emotional to have sat where heroes like Mike Parkes, Graham Hill, Jack sears, David Piper, Jo Siffert, Mike Salmon, Scarfiotti etc. have been.
The reason it sounds nice is that Andy Newell really knows what he is doing concerning vintage race car preparion.
Andy normally isn't allowed to race it , but he is alot faster in the car than Fisken, Bamford et al.
Next time I'm over in the UK, I will take you over to his shop by Donnington If you want, to have a look at the GT 40 etc.

That would be great, as long as I can get the time off from my domestic duties!
You can get into the cars at the Revival too, if you're lucky / ask politely. I had a chat with David Piper about his fantastic green Ferrari P2 and P3 this year. That's another great sounding car.
Here are some pics I took of the P3 a the 2005 Revival:

It's a high res MPEG 2 that works better on Vista. The sound hasn't uploaded very well unfortunately.

In 1973? That predates the Lotus Esprit, anyway.
There was also an Elan version of the late 80s-something Ford Thunderbird. In general, Lotus wasn't very good about intellectual property matters.

Tim, it pre-dates the Esprit Production car (1974) but the Giugiaro Esprit concept car was first shown in 1972.
So technically the Esprit name showed up on a GM Pontiac production car , before the Lotus production car.
