They did try but Proton can't let go of Lotus. It's way too valuable to them from an engineering & design standpoint. Lotus Engineering is where the value of Lotus lays, not the car piece. And Lotus has been making inroads with Chinese and Indian car companies. That's where most of the car market will be going over the next couple decades. Malaysia is in a good location and Lotus has and will take more advantage of it. Lotus has engineering offices in China and I think has or will be opening one in India.

Well if Lotus engineering makes big bucks in the far east, that should mean good things for Lotus cars right?

Pretty much. Lotus develops tons of products that never see the light of day - at least not as a "Lotus" product. The reason is that they sell/license some to other companies and part of those agreements is that Lotus can't use that technology themselves. The other part of this is how Lotus Engineering uses Lotus Cars as a development platform. That's were the fun happens. They develop technology (like aluminum extrusions and bonding processes) that gets put on Lotus cars.

So the car division and engineering division is linked together financially or not?
