I thought it would be fun to test everyone's knowledge of just certain areas of cars. I wanted to get this rolling with one that shouldn't be too hard.

jimmybondi
04-08-2008, 08:27 AM
Easy one:

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 09:04 AM
That's the Hot Wheels Lotus Concept by Steven Crijns.

Jimmy this must be it. Never seen it before:

Correct!
I got the name now: Pininfarina Enjoy. :)

WayneB
04-08-2008, 12:03 PM
Thats right it's the 2003 Lotus Elise based Pininfarina Enjoy:)

The Hot Wheels concept is a design model as you know, so does that mean they are included in this quiz too?

Martin
04-08-2008, 01:32 PM
Sure, lets include anything that's ever had a Lotus badge on it or was sold with the Lotus name attached to it.

Lotus Elan +2 ?????

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 03:34 PM
No, but almost.

Martin
04-08-2008, 04:09 PM
Elan Plus S130

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 04:30 PM
No, but I may as well tell you as you're so close, it's the Metier ll concept car and it formed the basis of the Lotus Elan + 2 . Ron Hickman started design work on Project M20 in 1963, and by 1964 Lotus had produced a scale model. A full size working prototype was registered for the road in 1966 (NRO 119D), called the Metier II Prototype. It wasn't given a type designation and has just been fully restored.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc299/mark_88_turbo/Lotus_Metier_ll.jpg

Martin
04-08-2008, 06:07 PM
Fascinating! I knew nothing about that.

I guess you get to go again then since we didn't guess it.

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 06:30 PM
I think it's Jimmy's turn. If not, i'll be happy to do another.

Martin
04-08-2008, 06:32 PM
Is that a producton plus 2 behind it or is that also a Metier?

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 06:38 PM
That's a production +2. There are various subtle differences between the Metier and the +2, the most obvious being the shape of the pop up lead lamps and front indicators.

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 07:44 PM
Ok, here's another:

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc299/mark_88_turbo/Hot_Lotus.jpg

04-08-2008, 08:10 PM
Damn thats blurry....but maybe thats what you had in mind....:)

Mark B.
04-08-2008, 08:24 PM
Apologies for the poor quality, it's not intentional, there are very few good images of this car kicking around.

However, I have recently sourced some new images of it from a book (which I got at the Lotus Festival :)) and will get them scanned when go back to work.

Kylie
04-08-2008, 10:56 PM
Looks like an early Europa, but which one ill have to dig deeper with those knock off wheels

WayneB
04-08-2008, 11:03 PM
Its the GKN Lotus 47D (powered by a Rover V8)

http://47d.org/47d/47-bird0.jpg

Mark B.
04-09-2008, 07:42 AM
Well done Wayne :). GKN 47D was loaned to Autocar magazine in 1975, who said at the time that it was the fastest accelerating car they had ever tested and it's top speed beat the Lamborghini Miura and Daytona.

Lotus Ford 40

Mark B.
04-09-2008, 07:18 PM
Lotus Type 30 or 40?

Jussi, we did it at the same time!

Martin
04-09-2008, 07:21 PM
Jussi, incorrect.
Mark you have two answers and know what know about Jussis answer this shouldn't be too hard.

Mark B.
04-09-2008, 07:24 PM
There was very little between the 30 and the 40, but for engine size, stiffer chassis and various rather ineffective wings / splitters. As they said, the 40 had 10 more mistakes.

Martin
04-09-2008, 07:26 PM
Yes, its the 30. You're next.

Mark B.

Jimmy....is it Lada????

Exactly!
Did I mention, that a friend of mine bought the car? :mf_dribble:

Martin
04-10-2008, 12:56 PM
Seriously! Jimmy, tell us more about it if you have some info on it!

Jussi
04-10-2008, 01:23 PM
Yep, like Martin said, sounds very interesting :)
What kind of condition car is at the moment? That's a piece of history :)

Mark B.
04-10-2008, 10:09 PM
Shapecraft Elan.Clockwork

Yes, well done. It is the Elan and it's the Lotus Elan fastback hardtop by Surbiton Motors - Shapecraft.

http://www.lotuselan.net/uploads/road_n_track_64_5_1.jpg

Another is a one off Lotus Elan "GTO" which is being restored at the moment and looks much better, but can't find the pic .

WayneB
04-10-2008, 11:31 PM
I like that Shapecraft Elan alot more than the Lotus Lada (which is better off forgotton IMO):(

Frua's Lotus Elan was gorgeous (like a baby Maserati Mistral)

Martin
04-11-2008, 01:15 PM
Wow, I've never seen that before. That really is a cute little Mistral look a like. I would hate to think that they put that in a crusher, hopefully it's in a museum somwhere. :001_unsure:

Convertible g body Esprit.

WayneB

Lotus 300 Sport concept, it was going to be a low cost Esprit replacement for North America only.

Lotus Emotion by Bertone.

Mark B.
04-22-2008, 09:45 AM
Wayne,
well done with the Federal Esprit. The S300 was a decal put on later, as this was a picture of the car taken at the Lotus Factory back in 1998. Although it say the car was called the S300 Concept in the Rosso Bianco Auto Museum, I'm not sure the project was ever called that.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc299/mark_88_turbo/Lotus_Esprit_Federal.jpg

And here's the concept rendering, no doubt done / overseen by Peter Stevens:

WayneB
04-22-2008, 11:00 AM
It looks like the wheels were swapped as well as the decal being added, Im glad they didnt put that one into production!:)

Re: the Bertone Emotion, I believe that one was was done on the instructions of GM head of design Chuck Jordan in the USA and with little or no involvement from Lotus in the UK.

I like the front end and windscreen on that car, but the slab sides make it look too heavy. Would have liked to have seen it in other colours.

I dont know who did the conversion though, but I think it was done by the owner back in the day:(

Its the Lotus Carlton/Opel Omega based Pininfarina Chronos of 1991.

It was also painted at different times silver and finally yellow(with modifications to the headlights and interior)

Wow! Thats a great looking car. I have never seen it, thus why I didn't respond. Time to ask another one Wayne.

Mark B.
04-28-2008, 04:16 PM
Never seen that one before. Was it a serious proposition for Lotus / GM?

Just spoken to Brian Angus about the blue Esprit concept. He said it was designed by Peter Stevens, it was a rolling chassis (no engine) with no interior, just a skin over an Esprit chassis and it was dismissed due to the potentual high tooling costs; all the panels, glass and windscreen are different to the standard Esprit. He's forwarding me some more details on it for the website :).

http://www.lotusespritturbo.com/Lotus_Esprit_Federal_Concept_Thum.jpg

WayneB
04-28-2008, 04:43 PM
From what I can gather, the Chronos was commisioned from Pininfarina as an GM ideas car (by then VP styling Chuck Jordan).

GM have been stealing ideas /and or getting cars done by Pininfarina for ages(like many other manufacturers)

As for the Lotus 300, Its definately not one of my favourites Mark, and I can see why they must have thought it wasnt worth the effort.:(

Its just too bland(for me)

If anyone else wants to put up a car for us to muse over, its OK with me.

me.

Yes, I know wht you mean, but I like the clean lines, looks a bit like the MG-EXE.
Just received this from Brian:

Styled by Peter Stevens in 1986 as a replacement for the forthcoming, rebodied Esprit, this full scale concept car was formed in glassfibre from a clay buck and partly incorporated a chassis. Purely a styling exercise model, it was completed over spring/summer 1986 prior to the launch the following year of the Esprit with updated coachwork.
The latter, code-named X180 and also by Stevens, was distinguished by stunning, completely new, more rounded and softer coachwork than the Giugiaro styled, sharp–edged original, and offered much more interior space while retaining the same basic Esprit mechanical components and dimensions; in comparison this styling exercise featured more extreme styling changes, such as a significantly different glasshouse area and roof treatment.
The need to divert a large majority of Lotus’ resources into the forthcoming front wheel drive Elan, however, again designed by Stevens, ensured that the project – which, incidentally, had begun after the takeover of Lotus by General Motors in January 1986 – remained still-born.
Just as an example, this Esprit Replacement Concept Car subsequently languished in a lonely corner of a workshop. Quite why the car bears a 300 motif on the passenger door, incidentally, is a mystery and has no connection with this concept car, or the Esprit Sport 300 launched some years later.

Anyone know the details of the photo?

WayneB
04-29-2008, 02:36 PM
Thats the 1965 Ford Galaxie that Colin Chapman was given by Ford when Lotus won the Indy 500 for the first time.

Mrs.Chapman is standing next to it.

WayneB

I recognised that car from a B+W photo I have of it in a book.

I had no idea the Chapman family still owned it and had been actually driving it around reciently!

My uncle had a BRG 1963 Galaxie 500 convertable in England.

He got a ticket once for having tailights that were too bright!

They (the British police) made him take out most of the bulbs to dim them down.

Loved those tailights, they looked like rocket boosters.:w00t:
