picture this. you open a Road & Track magazine. you see an advertisement for Lotus.

the page shows a Lotus car (Ethos perhaps) in a great left hand turn on a race track. the left side of the car has its tires on thr rumble strips.. ( perfect apex ) The car is handling thr turn just right, !! cuting into the corner of the turn.

the caption above says

" To build the worlds greatest handling sports car, we at Lotus have learned to cut a few corners, in all the right places !.

..............Meanwhile somebody from Lotuses advertising agency reads Brians post and calls MJK in the morning to pitch it:-

"Mister Kimberley , have I had a great idea for an advert".......................

I like it!

I hate that one where all they have is a picture of the Exige and above it is written: "Holy Sh*t" That is just weak in my opinion.

Brian,

I've been thinking about this ad idea of yours for several days now. When I first read it I thought "sweet" but something was gnawing at me about it and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then it dawned on me today what it was. The "Project Eagle/Ethos/E????" is supposed to target a "slightly wider" audience than the track junkie. I'm not sure that the general public would get the ad. Now in R&T it would probably work fine, especially with an Exige or even an Elise. But with the new 2+2, I'm not sure.

Please don't get me wrong. I really think you do have a winner, with a little tweaking, and I really hope Lotus uses the idea (and more so hope they pay you a bit for it also).

thanks man. I understand what you are thinking . heck, I dont care if they use it or not, it was just an idea, but I totally understand what you are thinking.

Porsche has great ad's as does some other brands that like to have their cars on the track so I thought it was kind of fitting. but, it might be better suited for Porsche.

But, you are probably right.

Absolutely I'm right. ;)

I think you're getting me wrong. I really think the idea is great. Back in the early '90s, I worked in management in the marketing division for a large computer consulting firm, so I have a little background. And here is the important part: I would have had the marketing department all over this kind of idea.

Edit: And I hope you keep coming up with more. This really is good.

David I agree with you. its all about the target auidience. maybe the new car isnt the type of audience that would take the new car to the track.

I agree.

but, who knows maybe they will use it. I sent it to Mike and to Arnie to see what they though and if they could use it.

I think that Lotus is just trying to reach out to a wider group. I'm sure that many will take the Project Eagle to the track. I would, but I'm a track junkie :D.

Come to think of it, it wouldn't be bad for people to understand that the car is track worthy even if they don't plan on taking it there...

So now it's a 2 page ad that shows your tracked Project Eagle idea on the right and on the left side, Dad by one open door of the Project Eagle, Mom by the other open door (you pick who was driving ;)) with 2 kids crawling out of the back...

Top of left page over the "family car" picture: "To create the world's best handling sports car, we at Lotus have learned to cut a few corners..."

Bottom of right page under the tracked car: "...in just the right places."

Does Lotus really need to advertise at all?

Ferrari and Aston-Martin never do and they seem to do all right.:)

Getting the cars in the right places with the right people works wonders IMO.

I think they do. Lotus is not Ferrari or Aston Martin in the world outside of motor heads. Lotus has a lot to do to get the name out there and educate consumers. Think Porsche....not Ferrari when it comes to competition in the dollar world.

Nice to see that MJK brought out his favourite Marketing phrase in the launch of the Evora....."Lotus Evora, for the few who know the difference".

That was always my favorite...

Although, "F*#K it, that'll do" has a ring to it!

I did notice that. When was that ever used though. Or was it ever used in print?
